Though the time of her taking the course had some intermittent breaks due to personal crisis and challenges, Shawna eventually built upon this coding foundation and Shawna was later transferred to the coding department of the same facility where she coded various scenarios for another 2 years.

Shawna admits she greatly gained from a wide range of this on-the-job familiarity from this phase. “From special studies to wound care —- this was the phase that started me off towards securing my CCA,” Shawna recalls. “I wanted to improve my marketability,” she laughingly added. Not long after, she moved to a new workplace, this time to focus on family practice.

“Even then, the job market was getting more and more competitive. I could not work as much hours as I would have wanted to,” Shawna started off. “My employers may have been good with their people, but they could not offer me a full time position in coding and billing just yet,” she recalled.

Likewise, at the same time, Shawna felt she was limited by her options as there are only so much that a non-certified coder could get into nowadays. She grew determined to get AAPC certified. “I felt it was my ticket to better opportunity,” she adds.
