What is a Specialty Credential?
In case you are not aware yet, there are medical coding specialty credentials, which allow coders to demonstrate superior levels of expertise in their respective specialties. These specialty credentials are stand-alone certifications. For example, this means that one may obtain a specialty credential without a prerequisite to hold a credential of the AAPC’s CPC®, CPC-H® or CPC-P®

What are some of the benefits of becoming a specialty credentialed coder?
Better Pay: According to an AAPC salary survey, Specialty Credentialed Coders earn an average of 28% more than their non-certified counterparts. The average annual wage for a credentialed coder is $44,750 compared to $37,290 for a non-credentialed coder.
Increased Job Opportunities: 41% of coding positions are closed to non-certified coders. Recent search of monster.com revealed 310 available medical coding positions, 128 of which required certification.
Job Security: 50% of survey respondents said that Certification was required for employment at their current positions (up from 42%), plus so much more!

To acquire a specialty credential, coders must have a minimum of 2 years of coding experience within their discipline.
